When buying a ring, it’s important to know how you want it to look and feel. Whether you’re looking for an everyday ring or an elegant piece to wear for special occasions, this ring buying guide will point you in the right direction.
Ensuring you account for the feel of a high-dome profile or wide band is the difference between finding a comfortable and sleek fit or buying a ring that never makes it out of the box.
What profile do you want?
A ring’s profile is its shape when viewed from the side—its silhouette, if you will. The profile looks at how curved, flat, or rounded the exterior surface is.
Two rings might have the same width but have a different profile—these rings will feel completely different to wear. As well as this, the profile of a ring can affect how the ring will wear over time.
Low-dome profile:
A ring with a low-dome shape has a gentler curve and a flatter top surface.
Customers often note that low-dome rings have a slimmer, more modern look. Low-dome rings tend to be more lightweight and less bulky between your fingers. This shape makes it the easiest to wear as a daily accessory.
In terms of long term wear, as these rings tend to be thinner, tiny scratches can appear sooner than they would on a wider or higher-domed band.
High-dome profile:
A ring with a high-dome shape has a more pronounced curve, giving it a taller, rounder and more-full silhouette.
Rings with a high-dome are ideal for customers looking for a more traditional look. These rings have more presence between the fingers, giving them a more substantial or weighty feel.
The high-dome shape is also more forgiving of small marks.
Should you size up?
Taking a ring’s profile into account, when should you size up to ensure a comfortable fit?
Low-dome rings tend to be true to size.
If the band is wider than 8mm—consider sizing up. The increased surface area of a wider band causes more friction and feels tighter on the finger than a narrow band of the same size.
High-dome rings are usually true to size however, if the band is wide or you sit between sizes it would be wise to size up.
If your fingers are prone to swelling, you’re very active or you prefer a loose fit, sizing up would also be a good option for you.
