One of our most commonly asked questions is about whether or not our wooden products are waterproof. It’s an understandable question to ask! Watches, sunglasses, rings and bracelets are all accessories that we wear around water.

What happens if you get your premium wooden accessory wet? Read on to find out!

Is regular wood waterproof?

No, wood is not naturally waterproof! When regular, dry wood is soaked in water, the fibers of the wood take on water and make the wood expand and weaken. Wet wood is soft and prone to damage from regular wear and tear.

What’s the difference between waterproof and splash-resistant?

Waterproof means that something is impervious to water. You can leave something that’s waterproof underwater for prolonged periods of time and not have to worry about water damage.

If something is splash-resistant, it can withstand small amounts of water like splashes, light rain or a brief exposure to water. You are safe to wash your hands or work in the kitchen without damaging a splash-resistant accessory.

Are Joycoast’s wooden watches water-resistant?

Our wooden watches are splash-resistant, meaning they can handle rain or handwashing. However, we advise against swimming, showering, or scuba diving while wearing them.

Are Joycoast’s wooden sunglasses water-resistant?

Yes, our wooden sunglasses are water-friendly. Some pairs even float! However, we recommend avoiding frequent submersion for non-floatable styles.

What do you do if your Joycoast splash-resistant watch is exposed to too much water?

If one of our splash-resistant watches gets wet, immediately remove it from the water and gently dry the exterior with a soft cloth – avoid shaking the watch. Don't touch the buttons or the crown, as this can push water further inside.

Avoid heating your watch, using something like a hairdryer, as this can cause further damage to your watch.

If there's visible condensation or fogging inside the watch, it’s a sign that there is water inside of your watch. If this is the case, consider placing your watch in a container with an absorbent material like uncooked rice or silica gel for a few days to help draw out the moisture, or seek professional help from a watch repair service.

How to care for your wooden accessories

Once every few months, apply natural oils like almond or coconut oil to moisturise the wood and enhance its natural grain. Store the watch in a dry place when not wearing it to prevent moisture damage.

If you accidentally get something on your wooden accessory, clean it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it immediately. Avoid exposing your piece to extreme temperatures or bright sunlight, as these can also cause the wood to fade or warp.

Conclusion

Best practice for owning a wooden accessory is to wear it with pride while avoiding prolonged exposure to water or heat. Your wooden accessory is an extension of you and your excellent sense of style.

Water is a part of day to day life, don’t stress if your watch gets splashed. Dry it off and get on with your day.
